EU's strategy and support for cancer research

Rule 138

In order to develop ways of effectively preventing cancer, we first need to understand its complexity and the role of factors and determinants (e.g. lifestyle, environment, workplace exposure, gender and age). A report by the Mission Board for Cancer seems to focus in particular on individual characteristics and behaviour, the need to examine how people perceive the threat to their health and the risk of cancer, and how unhealthy behaviour can be changed.
The report recommends that genetic and biological studies be carried out in order to gain an understanding of the molecular processes in cancer cells and the interaction between the tumour and its host. However, it is well documented by the WHO that the role of social determinants of health is a major factor in the outcome of the disease. This is more relevant than individual behaviour, which is affected and determined by these determinants.
The following questions thus arise:
- 1.Does the EU's strategy in the fight against cancer provide support for studies into understanding the relationship between the environment and health in general?
- 2.Does the Commission intend to provide more support for research into social determinants of health in order to better understand patients and their medical history with this disease?
