Attracting young people with suitable skills into the forestry sector

Question for written answer  E-001934/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Ioan-Rareş Bogdan (PPE)

The forestry sector is an important source of employment in both the formal and informal economy, especially in remote areas where few alternatives exist. Furthermore, the forestry industry plays an important role in creating new jobs, including eco-tourism, recreation and health services.

New and modern working methods in this sector are now making it necessary to recruit a skilled workforce and offer decent working conditions. At the same time, the shortage of young skilled workers appears to be a problem affecting the whole of Europe.

Measures are therefore needed to rise to this challenge and attract as many people as possible into the forestry sector.

What initiatives will the Commission take to attract young people into this sector, bearing in mind that new and modern forestry methods require a special set of skills?
