In recent weeks there have been a number of cases of discrimination against migrants by police officers in the Autonomous Community of Valencia (Spain).
According to the NGO Valencia Acoge and the victims themselves, this degrading and humiliating treatment occurred when the migrants went to apply for citizenship for their children. Police threatened them with penalties including expulsion, provided them with false information about their rights and denied them legal assistance.
Such humiliating treatment of migrants is in violation of the fundamental rights enshrined in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights[1], Framework Decision 2008/913/JHA[2] on combating certain forms and expressions of racism and xenophobia, and Directive 2000/43/EC[3].
- 1.Does the Commission consider that these occurrences infringe fundamental rights and violate EU legislation on equal treatment?
- 2.What action does the Commission intend to take to put a stop to these worrying occurrences?
- 3.Does the Commission intend to consult the Spanish and Valencian authorities on bringing an end to this type of treatment?
