MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on a Europe of museums

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on a Europe of museums

The European Parliament,

– having regard to Part XV of Annex VI to its Rules of Procedure,

– having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas culture elevates the spirit and is a source of individual and collective enrichment;

B. whereas our heritage is an integral part of our identity, which can be traced back thousands of years;

1. Draws attention to the role of museums in making art and culture accessible to as many people as possible;

2. Calls for the official designation of ‘European masterpiece’ to be introduced to promote and protect this heritage;

3. Calls for a European fund to be set up to help museums buy and repatriate European masterpieces;

4. Takes the view that this must be accompanied by the establishment of a group of experts covering all periods and categories of works of art.
