Motion for a European Parliament resolution on enhanced military cooperation by Member States in the Sahel region
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Articles 42 and 43 of the Treaty on European Union,
– having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas, on 13 May 2019, the Council made the Sahel a ‘strategic priority’ for the EU and its Member States;
B. whereas jihadist groups are re-emerging in the region;
C. whereas France is bearing most of the human and financial costs of military engagement to ensure the safety of all Member States;
D. whereas the EU training missions (EUTM) in the Sahel are vital but insufficient;
1. Believes that Member States should show solidarity with France and the G5 Sahel countries by making contributions in the form of funding or logistics;
2. Believes that Member States in a position to do so must deploy their special forces in combat operations in coordination with French and regional armed forces.
