Motion for a European Parliament resolution on farm murders in South Africa
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Article 9 of the Cotonou Agreement of 2000,
– having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas white South Africans, and in particular farmers (‘boere’), are the victims of race-based attacks characterised by severe torture and often ending in murder; whereas there are 132.2 murders on farms per 100 000 people versus 36.4 per 100 000 in the country’s population as a whole;
B. whereas the President of South Africa denies that these murders are racially driven, despite evidence to the contrary;
C. whereas the recent murder of a 21-year-old farmer, who was stabbed several times and tied to a pole with a rope around his neck, has led to widespread protests by farmers across the country;
1. Urges the Member States to openly admit that these brutal attacks are racially driven and to support the plight of people of European descent who have lived in South Africa for generations, and in particular that of South African farmers;
2. Urges the Member States to put pressure on the South African Government to prioritise tackling these crimes and to prosecute those who directly or indirectly call for the murder of farmers and white South Africans.
