Motion for a European Parliament resolution on measures to encourage universities and secondary schools to take part in archaeological excavations
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas archaeology is a discipline of fundamental importance if we are to understand the past and share this knowledge with younger generations;
B. whereas the survey ‘Europeans and archaeology’, on public perceptions of archaeological heritage, has highlighted certain gaps in the understanding of archaeologists’ work and their day-to-day activities;
C. having regard to the investment potential of the Digital Europe Programme 2021-2027 and the close correlation between culture and new technologies, such as autonomous robotics;
1. Calls on the Commission to step up educational measures designed to enhance the EU’s archaeological heritage and skills by using state-of-the-art equipment in the archaeological field;
2. Urges the Commission to provide funding for autonomous robotics in order to overcome the limitations arising from the hazardous nature of certain sites, such as mines and tunnels;
3. Calls on the Commission to introduce measures and financial tools to encourage students from universities and secondary schools to get involved in archaeological excavations.
