Motion for a European Parliament resolution on establishing a Europe-wide ‘Remembrance Day’ to commemorate the victims of the foibe massacres

The European Parliament,

 having regard to the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union,

 having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas the EU’s priorities include peace, reconciling peoples with their history and upholding democracy and human rights;

 whereas, in the aftermath of the Second World War, the Italian population of Venezia Giulia, Istria and Dalmatia suffered violence and persecution at the hands of the Popular Committees for the Liberation of Yugoslavia, resulting in the deaths of over 10 000 innocent Italians;

C. whereas for many years this tragic episode of history was concealed, thus preventing the world from learning about a human disaster which is a black mark in Europe’s recent history;

D. whereas on 19 September 2019 Parliament adopted a resolution on the crimes of communism, equating them with those of any other totalitarian regime;

1. Considers that the ‘Remembrance Day’ should be established throughout Europe to promote educational initiatives and events focusing on the history and documentation of the tragedy suffered by the Italian and all other victims of foibe massacres, and of the exodus of the Istrians, Fiumans and Dalmatians, in order to preserve and revive their memory.
