Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the organisation of events to commemorate, across Europe, the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri

The European Parliament,

– having regard to Articles 6 and 167 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and Article 3 of the Treaty on European Union,

– having regard to the Commission communication of 22 May 2018 on ‘Building a Stronger Europe: the role of youth, education and culture policies’,

– having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas one of the hallmarks of Europe is the sheer size and importance of its historical and cultural heritage;

B. whereas, among all the countries on the continent, it is universally known that Italy has one of the most important historical and artistic heritages in the world;

C. whereas 2021 marks the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri, who best represents Italian literary tradition; whereas the Divine Comedy is his most famous and translated work in the world, in addition to being one of the greatest masterpieces of world literature;

D. whereas Dante’s masterpieces have influenced the literature of the entire world, owing to an extraordinary representation of Western thought, ranging from references to Greek and Latin literature to biblical references;

1. Is of the view that, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death, educational initiatives of historical or documentary interest should be promoted across Europe in order to preserve and restore the memory of the Supreme Poet.
