Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the importance of World War II remembrance

The European Parliament,

– having regard to its resolution of 19 September 2019 on the importance of European remembrance for the future of Europe[1],

– having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas the Second World War was the most devastating war in Europe’s history;

B. whereas the Second World War broke out as a result of a series of historical events, which included demands for reparations from post-war Germany, social disruption which led to the proliferation of the Nazi ideology, ineffective cooperation in the League of Nations, the Treaty of Munich, the imperialistic nature of the Nazi ideology, and the covert Nazi attack in Gliwice on 31 August 1939;

C. whereas the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact cannot be considered the sole reason for the outbreak of the Second World War;

1. Condemns in the strongest possible terms the acts of aggression, genocide, crimes against humanity and other gross human rights violations perpetrated by Nazis, communists and other totalitarian regimes;

2. Expresses its deepest respect and sympathy for each and every victim of totalitarian regimes;

3. Condemns the propagation and all manifestations of totalitarian ideologies such as Nazism and Stalinism;

4. Condemns historical revisionism and the glorification of Nazi ideologies.
