Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the intervention criteria for the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF), with an annual budget of EUR 150 million, provides support to people who have lost their job as a result of major globalisation-induced structural changes in world trade patterns, by funding up to 60% of the cost of projects designed to help redundant workers find another job or set up a business;
B. whereas the EGF is mobilised only if more than 500 workers[1] are made redundant by a single company;
C. whereas the health crisis that has hit many Member States threatens to inflict severe economic damage that will lead to job losses;
D. whereas the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus is a consequence of globalisation and of free movement in the EU;
1. Takes the view that the EGF’s intervention criteria should be broadened to cover smaller companies;
2. Calls for an increase in the EGF’s annual budget for the 2021-2027 period;
3. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council and the Commission.
