Motion for a European Parliament resolution on measures to protect and encourage the sustainable use of soil and so foster economic recovery and urban regeneration
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas soil is exposed to a variety of degradation processes and is threatened by phenomena such as erosion, loss of organic matter, decline in biodiversity and desertification;
B. having regard to the recommendations made in European Court of Auditors’ Special Report No 33/2018 entitled ‘Combating desertification in the EU: a growing threat in need of more action’;
C. whereas the sustainable use of soil also protects biodiversity and guarantees the stability of the agri-food supply chain;
1. Urges the Commission to introduce financial tools to support the remediation and restoration of contaminated sites in Member States;
2. Calls on the Commission to take measures to encourage the sustainable use of soil in order to support food production and protect biodiversity;
3. Urges the Commission to draw up a strategy involving projects to remediate and restore soil and so foster economic recovery and urban regeneration.
