Change in EU sugar policy

Question for written answer E-002063-19
to the Commission
Rule 130
Roberta Metsola (PPE)

A report drawn up by the Centre for Food Policy of the University of Warwick suggests that the EU’s agricultural and trade policies have become increasingly oriented to the demands of food and drink manufacturers, ensuring them wider access to cheaper sources of sugar and sweeteners.

There are few incentives from the supply side for food and drink companies not to use sugar to sweeten, bulk, colour and preserve their products.

Can the Commission provide information on whether it sees a need to change the EU’s sugar policy and move towards policies aimed at further considerable reductions in the use of sugar products?
