Fairfax County Special Education PTA Awards
About a month ago, I was surprised when I found a message in my work email, with the invitation for the Fairfax County Special Education Pta Awards.
I was one of the nominees.
They asked me if could attend the event, also requesting a picture of me (they promptly received an embarrassing one where I look like a confused toad).
A week later, when I had already forgot all about it, I got the e-ticket via email for tonight’s Awards.
Because of various reasons and the inscrutable way my alien brain and soul work, I HAD FIRMLY DECIDED NOT TO GO.
Like a true super-wifey, Christina spent half of the day trying to convince me, then my parents from Italy FaceTimed me to provide some extra motivation. My Mamma was almost in tears and said that she was very proud of all my accomplishments in the USA and for representing the people of ItalyLand, then my dear Papà used some Sicilian words to threaten me to attend the special night.
Well, at the very last second before the beginning of everything, I thought about how many people I was going to disappoint with my stubborn attitude (also my dad’s menacing laser eyes were a big part in the twist) and I told my wife that we could both go and have a date-night there.
To make it short, I was already happy and satisfied to receive just a nomination and a certificate, glad to see hundreds of people in the room from many different schools, sharing my passion for helping kids and giving them a little more than what’s requested from our positions, with a pinch of tasty craziness.
When we took our seats, I realized that I was the only staff member from Crossfield Elementary and started feeling a little tiny but, right when I was completely miniaturized in my chair, the fancy ceremony began.
There were 23 nominees in my category, the nice lady read them one by one and it seemed like centuries where going by, then at the end of the list...
I was absolutely shocked to hear Marco Talotta being called when I WON THE AWARD !!!
As soon as I made it home, it was fun surprising and telling the story to my own kids, who started celebrating their crazy Papa'.
Martina, in particular, looked at the plaque they gave me like it was made out of an astonishing material from another galaxy. She is probably still staring at it.
I bet my Sicilian Mamma is reading this post right now, with teary eyes, and my dad using his deadly laser eyes. Ciao. …...more
