Dear Leaders,
Following the events in April Big Brothers Big Sisters saw an unprecedented, 3,000% increase in volunteer mentor inquiries. Unfortunately I have to inform you that six months later, only two percent of those interested male applicants from the surge have actually completed the application process. Moreover, out of the thousand plus young people on Big Brothers and Big Sisters' waiting list more than a quarter of them are boys living in Baltimore City. While the response to this most important need has been overwhelming from women to the extent that Big Brothers Big Sisters is having trouble meeting the demand, the response from men has been lackluster. Ladies we thank you dearly but, it is time for men to step up and answer the call. This month we will be launching the Bmore Be Big Campaign that will target men to mentor Baltimore City Young Men. These young men may not be our sons but, they are our responsibility. Fellas its time for us to be more. You can start today by becoming a Big.
Sincerely,
Recently, Councilman Scott proudly supported the Elijah’s Hope Foundation, Inc’s first annual 5k Walk For Pregnancy + Infant Loss. This walk raised enough money to donate $500 to Roberta’s House Hope Project and $500 for the Elijah’s Hope Foundation scholarship fund. These contributions will go a long way to assisting mothers who have lost a child, allowing them to heal, connect with others, and learn healthy ways to cope and thrive. These funds will also assist a student that is pursuing a degree in reproductive health with a concentration in pregnancy loss.

Last week our Vanguard Knights Boys Basketball team began their quest to regain the middle school championship by participating in a preseason tournament. After a very competitive tournament our Knights emerged as the tournament champions. We are looking forward to another great year of Knights Basketball.

Recently, Councilman Scott visited YSP at Furley to check out Saturday Morning Soccer. Bringing YSP to Furley was a great decision and has helped to bring so many activities for young people to our neighborhood. YSP has transformed Furley Recreation Center from a closing center to a community anchor. We look forward to continued greatness at YSP.

Councilman Scott had a fantastic time speaking to students at Ken Ulman’s Innovation in Government class at the University of Maryland College Park! He discussed the need for leadership and unified movements against community violence. Councilman Scott also spoke about open data and improved policing strategies. Its always great to speak and listen to our next generation of bright minds. |
