6/8 and 6/9 Rocky Run MS Rising 7th Grade Parent Coffee

Dear Rising 7th Grade Parents and Guardians,

Rocky Run MS Student Services will be hosting Parent Coffees for our rising 7th grade families. We are providing two sessions and have split the sessions by students' last names. No need to attend both sessions. We are just offering the same session twice to keep the group small as possible. If you are unable to join, we will also be providing the recorded sessions afterwards.

Rising 7th Grade Virtual Parent Coffee

  • Monday, June 8th, 3-4 PM (Last names A-K)
  • Tuesday, June 9th, 10-11 AM (Last names L-Z)

This is the new link to the BBCU (virtual meeting location). It will say "Join Mrs. Larson's Classroom":

Please disregard the link we sent out last week. This is the correct link. We apologize for any confusion.

The focus of our presentation will be on how to get ready for middle school, as well as important facts to know. Share your questions with us in advance by completing this form

Please note that this is not the best time to address individual student concerns. If you have any specific concerns, contact one of our counselors for an individual conversation (see our counselors' contact info below).

  • Elective choices are subject to change based on space, teacher availability, schedule conflicts and academic intervention courses.

Feel free to contact one of our school counselors if you have questions or concerns about the selected courses. Course requests are a firm commitment. Course request changes will not be accommodated after June 15.

Algebra I Honors Placement Process

Historically, for students to be placed in Algebra 1 Honors in grade 7, students had to meet the following 3 criteria: Successful completion of adv. 6th grade math, IAAT score at or above 91 and SOL score 500 or above.

Due to Covid-19 and the suspension of Spring SOL, the IAAT score will be used as a single data point in determining Algebra 1 Honors placement in grade 7 for the 20-21 school year only.

If your child met the criteria (an IAAT score at or above the 91st percentile), he or she will be placed in Algebra 1 Honors. All students who qualify for Algebra 1 Honors are expected to complete an Algebra 1 Honors Preparation Module over the summer.

If your child is qualified but you would prefer a Math 7 Honors placement, please notify us immediately so a change in course placement can be made.

Contact us if you have any questions. See the counselor contact information below.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Team Desig 7th Gr - When you see this course listed on your child's course selection page, please know that this is not an actual course. Students will be assigned to one of the four interdisciplinary teams when the schedule is completed in the Fall.
  • Music Courses - Students who have signed up for the music courses (Band, Orchestra and Chorus) completed the audition and are currently placed in their recommended level. You should be able to see it in ParentVue. Please feel free to contact our Music teachers directly if you have any questions about the placement.
  • World Languages (high school credit bearing elective) - World Language courses are not a required course in Middle School. The courses are very rigorous and are ideal for students who have strong work habits. They must be on grade level or above for Reading and Math in order to be successful in class.
  • Online Courses - FCPS does not allow 7th grade students to take an online course during the school year. These courses will be available from their 8th grade year.
  • Intervention Courses - you may see some of our intervention courses in your child's course request such as Read 180, Action Literacy, Reading 7, PowerMath 7 and Strategies for Success. Placement is based on your 6th grade teachers input/recommendations and their achievement data. Please contact us for general questions about the course. If you have a question regarding the placement recommendation, please contact your child's current teachers and/or counselor.
  • Elective Change Request - please contact one of our Rocky Run counselors to make a request by June 15. All counselors' contact information is listed below.

FCPS 24-7 Learning (Blackboard)

All FCPS parents have access to their child's FCPS 24-7 Learning (Blackboard) account. Teachers will use this tool to share content with students and families during this time of distance learning.

If a teacher primarily uses their FCPS Google Classroom to share material, they will note it in FCPS 24-7 Learning to be sure parents are aware of content being shared. Parents do not have access to FCPS Google accounts, but may login with their child to view the content.

Your FCPS 24-7 Learning (Blackboard) login is the same as your SIS ParentVue login.
